KoncertKirken Organ Sound Art Festival 2017
Vyamanikal (Kit Downes & Tom Challenger) (uk)
1250 (Steffen Levring & Joshua Karjala-Svendsen) (dk)
Vyamanikal’s first album contains an innovative yet melodic collection of improvised pieces with sharply contrasting dynamics, microtonal nuances, and improvisational rapport that constantly engages and surprises. Since the album, they have gone on to perform at the Royal Festival Hall (as part of the ‘Pull Out the Stops’ Festival – welcoming the return of the newly-refurbished organ), Cafe Oto (as part of ‘Klammer Klang’), The London Contemporary Music Festival 2014, Cologne Philharmonie, Swaledale Music Festival – as well as several live broadcasts for the BBC.
From October 2014-October 2015 they were part of Aldeburgh Music’s ‘Open Space’ residency programme – a project that saw them travel to different local churches in Suffolk, investigating the differing acoustics and different organs (often in various states of disrepair) that they found, all documented in an album recording, their second album as a duo – ‘Vyamanikal’. This project finished with a concert in Aldeburgh Music Festival in 2016, as well as Manchester Jazz Festival and Marsden Festival. They are now working together with ECM, the University of Kent and Stavanger Concert Hall on various collaborations through 2017.
“Enticingly strange and wonderful sounds, so odd you can hardly believe it’s an organ making them” – Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph, 2014
“Downes and Challenger are onto something here and it goes beyond niche or novelty. Wedding Music deserves a spot near the top of this year’s best” – Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz, 2013

1250 is a recent constellation between video and sound artist Steffen Levring and computer programmer Joshua Karjala-Svendsen. Fuelled by research into early and ancient music and future parallels, they explore the physical and technological limits of sound and its ability to work as touch or pressure in a space. Sonic inputs come from field recordings, raw frequencies meeting, light turned into sound, breast pumps, church organs, airconditioners and other machinery.
Steffen Levring (b. 1982 Copenhagen) studied Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Fine Art, London and Cooper Union, New York. He was a resident in the Experimental Film Department at Kingston University, London in 2011-12. Recent screenings, exhibitions and performances include Outpost, Norwich, The Advisory, London, MK Gallery, Milton Keynes, Top Kino, Vienna, CPH:DOX Film Festival, Copenhagen and BALTIC 39, Newcastle. He co-runs the project spaces Tørreloft and Kiosk 7 in Copenhagen.
Joshua Karjala-Svendsen (b. 1985 Copenhagen) studied Design & Innovation at the Technical University of Denmark and Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York. By day he is the CTO & Partner of Founders startup studio. Exhibitions and performances include Mayhem, Copenhagen, 036, Copenhagen and various Copenhagen nightclubs.
