Kārlis Auziņš (saxophones) [LV] : album release
————
Kārlis Auziņš, the Latvian saxophonist extraordinaire, has been steadily building his presence on the scene with a lot of character. He was nominated as the best jazz album and best debut at Latvian music awards 2017 for his amazing quartet album ‘Images In Regard of The Central Reference System’. He’s also a founding member of the acclaimed ‘Mount Meander’ (Clean Feed, 2016), and has just released a trio album with his Latvian super trio Auziņš – Čudars – Arutyunyan entitled ‘Baltic’.
Here he’ll play a solo set, to celebrate his newest release, coming out on this day, a solo soprano sax improvisations on cassette tape called ‘split : body’. The cassette comes out at Gotta Let It Out.
Head of Hydrus : Nicole Hogstrand + Adam Grauman (viola da gamba duo) [SE]
————
81 million years ago, Head of Hydrus or Alpha Hydri was formed in the southern hemisphere of the Little Watershed. About 80909200 years later, baroque guitarists in Spain began to play on their Vihuelas with bows, inspired by the arabic instrument Rabab. Vihuelan developed and became a new instrument – Viola da Gamba, one of the renaissance and baroque’s most popular instruments.
Probably, both Peter Plancius and Jodocius Hondius, who in 1597 published the first star atlas in which Head of Hydrus was mentioned, were both familiar with the Viola da Gamba. What they probably did not know was that in the end of the 20th century two musicosmologists were to be born, who, with inspiration from Head of Hydrus Light, would create new music for two Viola da Gambas. This is it.
Sonja LaBianca + Tomo Jacobson (sax, electronics & double bass) [SE/PL]
————
This is a world premiere!
Sonja LaBianca is an exceptional saxophonist and composer, a founding member of a music collective and label eget værelse. She’s very well known for being a part of Selvhenter, and Valby Vokalgruppe. Her newest remarkable release ‘About Room/Room to be/Rooms’ heavily stirred up the Danish music milieu creating a lot of fuss. Last year saw her winning ‘New Danish Jazz Name of the Year’ at the Danish Music Awards, and this year she ‘The Musician of the Year’ at Steppeulven. Sonja’s music sounds like nothing else but Sonja’s music.
Tomo Jacobson is a Polish-born double bass player and composer, who’s been deeply involved in the Copenhagen improv music scene for the past decade. He’s been very active throughout the years touring internationally and having recorded over two dozen albums, twelve of which are his solo works. He’s been working with John Tchicai, Andrew D’Angelo, Lotte Anker, Adam Rudolph, Rasul Siddik, P.O. Jørgens, Frank Gratkowski, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Sun Araw, Mikołaj Trzaska, Michael Blake, Jacob Anderskov, Kresten Osgood, Hugh Steinmetz, Søren Kjaergaard, Torben Snekkested, Jesper Zeuthen, and many others. He’s double bass playing was categorised as “acoustic noise”.
