GONGAN – 60th anniversary of cultural exchange between Denmark and South Korea

This year Denmark and South Korea celebrates the 60th anniversary of cultural exchange. Therefore Jazz Denmark invites two traditional Korean musicians Bung Gill Choi (changoo) and Eunhee Choi (gayagum) to start a new musical collaboration between those two countries.
In this collaboration the musicians work with Jacob Anderskov (piano), Lotte Anker (saxophone) and Halym Kim (drums) and together they will create a new musical language with inspirations from the traditional Korean music and contemporary improvised music.
The project is called Gongan and in this project the musicians investigate in the Korean approach of flow, space and tension and transmit these elements into the context of Western improvised music. Gongan displays the possibility of how two different musical cultures can coexist and create a new musical understanding between South Korea and Europe. With adding the traditional Korean instruments changoo and gayagum this ensemble extends their sound and present a new soundscape.

I år fejrer Danmark og Sydkorea 60-års jubilæum for kulturel udveksling. Derfor inviterer JazzDanmark to traditionelle koreanske musikere, Bung Gill Choi (changoo) og Eunhee Choi (gayagum) til at starte et nyt samarbejde mellem disse to lande.
Sammen med musikerne indgår Jacob Anderskov (klaver), Lotte Anker (saxofon) og Halym Kim (trommer) i dette samarbejde, hvor de vil skabe et nyt musikalsk sprog med inspirationer fra den traditionelle koreanske musik og nutidige tendenser fra improviseret musik.
Projektet kaldes Gongan, og i dette projekt udforsker musikerne den koreanske tilgang til flow, rum og spænding, og transmitterer disse elementer ind i konteksten af vestlig improviseret musik. Gongan fremviser hvordan to forskellige musikalske kulturer kan sameksistere og skabe en ny musikalsk forståelse mellem Sydkorea og Europa. Ved at tilføje de traditionelle koreanske instrumenter, changoo og gayagum, udvider dette ensemble deres lyd og præsenterer et nyt lydlandskab.
