Axel Dörner & Johanna Sulkunen (DE/FI/DK)
Collaborating intensely for a week in the Danish countryside as part of an improvising summit in May 2019 and sharing ideas on improvisation and life, the idea of a duo was born. Both extending their instruments with electronics, the musical outcome is minimalistic, yet expressive.
With two very different backgrounds that are complementing each other, they are creating a beautiful net of textures and sounds each time new and unknown.
Axel Dörner
is one of the most unique voices in free improvisation. He developed a completely different language for the trumpet in the late 1990s. Most of the ensembles he is part of, are characterized by a non-hierarchical collaboration of the musicians involved. Since 2000 he is working on an electronic extension of his music on the trumpet. His extensive biography lifts SWR Jazzprize 2006, Jazzprize of the city of Berlin 2019 to name a few.

Johanna Elina Sulkunen
is a Finnish vocalist, composer and improviser living in Copenhagen since 2009. She is often working with text as a basis for constructing compositional and improvisational ideas. Her vocals are transformed electronically, creating multi-textured layers of sound and spontaneous beats, and anything in between. She has released three albums on her name, and is part of various other releases. Her latest album, ‘Koan/ILK,’ was a solo work with electronics. She has been nominated multiple times with the Danish Music Award, and she’s also a co-leader of a Danish Music Award-winning vocal group IKI. Apart from that, she has collaborated with artists such as Tomasz Stanko, Hilmar Jenson, Mike Sheridan among many others.
“Her newfound language and manipulated voice are used as a provocative Kōan. Forcing the listener to adopt a fresh, a deep listening-meditative approach, sometimes even dream state of mind to language and voices.” – Eyal Hareuveni. Salt Peanuts
