The Organetto
Miniaturization of Gothic organ, the porttativ organ appears in monastic workshops in the late twelfth century and disappeared around 1500, after Rafael had representing St. Cecilia reversing her attribute on the floor littered with broken instruments. Played by kings, jugglers, troubadours, monks and beggars, ancestor of the accordion, the organetto is astonishing in its virtuosity and expressiveness. Used to accompany the voice, it is composed mostly of a set of open pipes, a bellows and a keyboard. In the Roman de la Rose of Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Mung, Pygmalion gives life to his wax statue in singing and playing a Motet with the portativ organ. A Legend says that the blind organist, poet and philosopher Francesco Landini (Florence ca 1325-1397) was able to tame the birds with his voice and his organetto. After disappearing from instrumental practice during the Renaissance, the portativ organ was rediscovered in the early twentieth century. There is a for the last twenty years a renewed interest on the part of researchers and inventive musicians, attracted by new expressive and musical horizons.
Christophe Deslignes
Christophe uttered his first great cry on earth as Neil Armstrong took his first small step on the moon. After a classical music education, learning piano and recorder, he discovered the portative organ, also called the organetto, when he began studying medieval music at the Schola Cantorum in Basle, Switzerland. He earned his diploma as a solo performer of medieval and renaissance music in 1995. He taught himself to play this forgotten instrument and, taking his inspiration from sources such as Astor Piazzolla’s bandoneon, invented new techniques for it. Christophe played the organ and portative organ with Mala Punica from 1992 to 1998, contributing to the group’s international success: they recorded five CDs that were both acclaimed by the public and rewarded by the critics. In 1998 he paid tribute to Francesco Landini (1325-1397), making a CD for the Ricercar label called Les Maîtres de l’organetto florentin au XIVème siècle. This recording was selected as 1998 CD of the Year by the French daily Le Monde.
Christophe then formed a duo with percussionnist Thierry Gomar and together they performed all over Europe. As co-founder of the ensemble Millenarium, he directed two major productions: Officium lusorum (a “Messe des fous”) and the Livre Vermeil de Monteserrat, which brought together the Chamber Music Choir of Namur, Ensemble Psallentes, the Pastoureaux Childrens Choir of Liège and Millenarium.
His discography comprises 40 recordings for labels such as Ricercar, Arcana, Erato, Carpe Diem, and Jade, six of them as leader or co-leader of Millenarium.
He has a longstanding interest in ancient civilisations, their rituals and artistic cultures, whether religious, popular, erudite or courtly. He also lends an attentive ear to all kinds of music from the modern world, drawing his knowledge and expertise from traditions both living and lost. An enthusiastic improviser journeying between oral and written musical culture, Christophe Deslignes painstakingly reconstructs the art of the wandering minstrel who can sing, play, dance, act and tell stories at the same time. Today he carries on a dual career as a solo performer and a participant in the creation of original forms of live entertainment.
