Østerlide swept onto the Norwegian folk music scene in late 2020, and quickly received international acclaim for their eponymous debut album. Their unusual arrangements of the traditional folk melodies give new perspectives and display a wide range of moods and textures – from a mere whisper to the brutally noisy.
Through open musical landscapes, or cramped and claustrophobic musical spaces, the listener is always carried on by the tireless and timeless folk melodies that have been shaped and honed through the centuries.
«Liv Ulvik’s voice is the sun. And the snow. It’s sacred, and she has a sacred presence in the way she shows us the music. And she’s searching. Searching for new ways to find sounds within herself. And actually seems supernatural in the way she performs them. I feel numb when I listen to the first hymn on the album, and feel myself reaching for romantic wordings. But it quickly becomes clear that this is not just Ulvik’s record. The other two musicians also have a strong presence – strong but subtle. They often play lightly and listen for overtones, small nuances, always in solidarity with the soundscape that emerges. Never boring, always surprising and original. They often have a light and elegant touch, but are also capable of giving resistance in a rough way. Rough and elegant. An album worth every second of attention.»

«I have a new favorite band. I am utterly obsessed with the otherworldly quality of Liv Ulvik’s voice and the way the ensemble pulls together and crafts sounds that feel like landscapes in your ears. It’s uncanny. I had never heard of these musicians before a few weeks ago, and now I’m sure I will never forget them. The lyrics are in Norwegian, which I do not speak or understand, but these sounds paint a portrait that I resonate with deeply… These melodies and sounds are haunting in all the ways you want to be haunted…»
